Little Victories So, I am a firm believer that certain things in life happen for a reason – or as a sign – so when my husband won a raffle for a year long gym membership at my daughter’s play last fall, I took that as a sign. At first, I thought what a waste – we will never use it – it is not near by – its only for one person and so on – in other words, I made excuses to make that sign less glaring in my face.

After the holidays my daughters started taking dance classes at the studio and believe it or not, they are there at the same time – Wednesdays from 4-6. Now two hours is not long enough to justify driving home but it is long enough to end up spending more money on things we don’t need or sitting in Panera Bread whiling away the time with a warm drink and a sweet treat. And then it HIT ME! The gym we won a membership for is right across the street from the dance studio!! That was my sign.

Yesterday after I dropped the girls off at dance, I went over to the gym with my shiny gift certificate in hand and signed myself up for the one year membership! My thought is that even if I use the membership once a week, it is better than letting the membership go to waste and I have no excuse not to workout on Wednesdays. Now I have a feeling I will end up using it more – especially once rehearsals for the spring musical start and I end up driving my girls to the studio 3-4 times a week.

Now, my first impression of the gym was one of slight overwhelming fear. There were so many machines, so many classes, so many people – all looking fit and fabulous. My guide showed me around and pointed out two places that didn’t seem scary – they have one whole gym just for women and another room of stationery bikes set up in front of a movie screen. I decided to stick with the ladies gym last night and it was a good place to start. 

Since I am still recovering from foot surgery, I did take it easy to start. I did 20 minutes easy on the recumbent bike to warm up, then 10 minutes on the rowing machine and 10 minutes on the treadmill walking on an incline. I did a few of the nautilus machines, stretched and called it a day. 

There are a few classes I want to try out – like a PilYo (Pilates/Yoga) class – and I think doing a class will help me make some new friends and keep me on track more. 

One thing I do know though, I need a new sports bra! Sounds like an Enell sports bra is in my future! But I digress… I am looking forward to going back and trying to get a few more walks in my neighborhood, too.
